Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came into the world with a divine purpose, a clear mission, and a specific method. His purpose was rooted in the love of God for mankind, His mission was to bring salvation and establish the Kingdom of God, and His method was to teach, serve, suffer, and offer Himself as the atoning sacrifice.
Jesus stated His purpose clearly:
“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10, LSB)
The world was in darkness and separated from God due to sin. Yet, out of His great love, God sent His Son:
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, LSB)
Jesus' mission was not only to seek and save but to proclaim the coming of the Kingdom of God. At the start of His ministry, He declared:
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:15, LSB)
He also came to call sinners to repentance, not to affirm the self-righteous:
“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:32, LSB)
Jesus' method was humility, servanthood, teaching, healing, and ultimately sacrifice. He taught about the Kingdom through parables, demonstrating spiritual truths in ways the humble could understand. He healed the sick, cast out demons, and showed compassion to the brokenhearted, all the while pointing them to the Father.
Jesus described His life of service:
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45, LSB)
The culmination of His mission was the cross. Jesus explained the necessity of His death:
“For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one takes it away from Me, but from Myself, I lay it down. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.” (John 10:17–18, LSB)
Through His death and resurrection, Jesus defeated sin and death, opening the way for eternal life for all who would believe. He gave His disciples the command to continue His work:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19–20, LSB)
Thus, the purpose of Jesus was to reconcile humanity to God, His mission was the announcement and establishment of the Kingdom, and His method was through loving service, sacrificial death, resurrection, and the commissioning of His followers to spread the good news.
