Life can sometimes bring pain so heavy that we do not even know how to pray. Yet our loving Father has not left us to carry sorrow alone. He draws near to those who call on Him. As Scripture says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, LSB).
When we are crushed, He bends low to comfort and lift us up.
King David knew this comfort well. He wrote words that have calmed the hearts of God's people for centuries: “Yahweh is my shepherd, I shall not want... Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me” (Psalm 23:1-6, LSB). David's confidence did not rest on the absence of trouble, but on the presence of his Shepherd.
When our hearts are broken and our spirits are weary, God promises that He is near. “Yahweh is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18, LSB). He is not far off. He is present with us. He is our refuge and our strength, our “very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1, LSB).
Even when we feel too weak to go on, the Lord strengthens us. “Those who hope in Yahweh will gain new power; they will mount up with wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31, LSB). God’s comfort is not only a warm embrace—it is new strength for each step ahead.
Jesus spoke directly to those who mourn. He said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4, LSB). He does not turn away from our sorrow. He draws near to it. He invites us to cast our anxieties onto Him, promising that when we seek first His kingdom, He will care for every need (Matthew 6:31-33, LSB).
Before Jesus went to the cross, He told His disciples, “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me” (John 14:1, LSB). He promised that He was preparing a place for them, and for us. No pain we carry will follow us there. There is coming a day when He will wipe away every tear (Revelation 21:4, LSB).
For now, we hold onto His peace. Jesus said, “In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, LSB). Paul reminds us to pray in everything and promises, “The peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7, LSB).
No matter how deep the hurt or how heavy the sorrow, there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life... will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39, LSB). His love is deeper than our pain and stronger than our fear. It will never fail.
Dear friend, if your heart is heavy today, remember this: you are not alone. The Shepherd walks with you. The Savior holds you. The Father sees every tear. Lift your eyes to Him, and drink deeply from His promises. You are loved with an everlasting love.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
Psalm 23:1-6, “Yahweh is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of Yahweh forever.”
Psalm 34:18, “Yahweh is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Isaiah 40:31, “Yet those who hope in Yahweh will gain new power; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not get tired; they will walk and not become weary.”
Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Matthew 6:31-33, “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
John 14:1, “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.”
John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
Philippians 4:6-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Revelation 21:4, “And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain. The first things passed away.”
