What Do the Scriptures Say About Astrology?

In an age when many look to the stars for guidance, it is vital for the people of God to know what the Scriptures truly say about astrology and those who seek counsel from the heavens. While the movements of celestial bodies reflect the majesty of the Creator, any attempt to derive personal destiny or understanding of life’s matters through star charts or horoscopes runs directly contrary to God’s Word.

The Mosaic Law expressly forbids such practices. Deuteronomy 18:10–12 speaks clearly against divination and the art of soothsaying: it is taboo for God’s people to consult astrologers or interpreters of omens. These practices are labeled as abominations by Yahweh Himself, and those who engage in them face divine judgment (Deuteronomy 18:10–12).

Jeremiah reiterates this prohibition for later generations. “Do not learn the way of the nations, and do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens, although the nations are terrified by them” (Jeremiah 10:2). The fear or wonder stirred by celestial signs is no excuse for idolatrous dependence on astrology.

Even in the palaces of pagan kings, astrology proved powerless. When King Nebuchadnezzar demanded his wise men interpret his dream, Daniel declared, “No wise men, conjurers, magicians, or diviners are able to declare it to the king. But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries” (Daniel 2:27–28). Only the one true God can disclose the secrets of our lives.

Isaiah’s prophetic lament over Babylon underscores the futility of such celestial arts: “You are wearied with your many counsels; let now the astrologers, those who behold visions by the stars, those who predict by the new moons, stand up and save you from what will come upon you. Behold, they have become like stubble; fire burns them; they cannot deliver themselves” (Isaiah 47:13–14). Even the most learned stargazers cannot rescue themselves from divine judgment.

Rather than seeking counsel from the stars, the believer is called to behold the glory of God in creation itself. “The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and the expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge” (Psalm 19:1–2). The cosmos proclaims God’s sovereignty, not horoscope predictions.

Therefore, let every follower of Christ flee from astrology and place unwavering trust in Yahweh alone. He alone knows our beginning and our end, and He has promised to guide those who draw near to Him in faith.

Let us therefore praise Yahweh for His abundant mercy and steadfast love, giving all glory, honor, and power to His holy name, now and forevermore. Amen.
