Although the dead are unconscious and rest in the grave until the resurrection, the Bible affirms that the spirit realm remains active. It is the unseen dimension where God's angels operate, His Spirit moves, and spiritual battles take place involving both holy and rebellious forces. These battles impact the physical world, including temptations, deceptions, persecution, and resistance to God’s truth.
Scripture teaches that believers are not to be ignorant of the spirit realm’s influence. Paul wrote:
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12, LSB)
“Be of sober spirit, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8, LSB)
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11, LSB)
Paul describes the armor in detail: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer (Ephesians 6:13–18). These are not physical weapons, but spiritual disciplines rooted in God’s Word and Spirit.
“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14, LSB)
We must not seek direct contact with spirits but rely on God’s Spirit and truth. Jesus resisted Satan’s temptations by quoting Scripture (Matthew 4), setting an example for us.
“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7, LSB)
The key to spiritual protection is to walk closely with God, remain grounded in Scripture, be alert, and maintain faith and prayer. Even though we do not see the battles raging in the heavenly realm, their influence is real, and victory comes through obedience to God and the power of His Spirit.
Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
1 Peter 5:8, “Be of sober spirit, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Ephesians 6:11, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:13–18, “Description of the armor of God: belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit, and prayer.”
Hebrews 1:14, “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?”
Matthew 4:
“1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.
3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
5 Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’;
and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”
7 Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory;9 and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’”
11 Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.”
James 4:7, “Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
