Yeshua, known as Jesus Christ, established certain ordinances for His followers within the New Covenant. These are not only rites of faith but deep expressions of spiritual truths intended to guide believers in their relationship with God and each other.
One of the primary ordinances is Baptism. Commanded in Matthew 28:19, 'Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,' baptism symbolizes the believer's new life in Christ. It represents a spiritual rebirth, a washing away of the old sinful nature, and a commitment to walk in the newness of life.
The Lord’s Supper, or Communion, is another crucial ordinance, instituted during the Last Supper. As described in 1 Corinthians 11:24-25, Jeshua took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, 'This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.' Similarly, after supper, He took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' This ordinance is a continual reminder of Yeshua's sacrifice and a proclamation of His death until He returns.
Beyond these ceremonial ordinances, Yeshua emphasized the principle of love as fundamental for His followers. John 13:34-35 records His command, 'A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.' This encapsulates the ethical and moral dimensions of the New Covenant.
The ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, along with the command to love, form the cornerstone of Christian practice under the New Covenant. They are not merely symbolic but are actionable commands that signify deeper spiritual realities and commitments.
'Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.' (Jude 1:24-25)
